About The Opportunity

This position is within the CIP Compliance group and reports to the Manager, CIP Compliance. It is located at the West Akron Campus. .(WAC)

Responsibilities Include

    • Leading processes to maintain and revise as needed FirstEnergy (FE) compliance program infrastructure including the administration and maintenance of compliance policies, programs, and procedures related to the North American Reliability Corporation (NERC) Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Standards.
    • Leading efforts to prepare for, coordinate and support compliance audits conducted by internal resources, consultants or regulatory organizations.
    • Leading Apparent or Root Cause Analysis processes related to compliance issues.
    • Verifying FE’s technical compliance with NERC, ReliabilityFirst (RF) and PJM policies and standards and identify opportunities for improvement in procedures and practices.
    • Acting as technical subject matter expert to lead processes to investigate, document and submit potential violations to regulatory organizations and ensure they are tracked for timely resolution and fully documented in auditable records.
    • Working with responsible FE organizations to coordinate resolving technical compliance issues and develop improvement recommendations and mitigation plans.
    • Utilizing FE compliance technology to assign, track and monitor compliance efforts.
    • Leading processes to ensure technical accuracy and completeness of FE compliance self-certification and data submittal activities.
    • Providing oversight on the procedural and technical accuracy of regulatory compliance concerning Bulk Electric System Cyber Systems.
    • Keeping responsible FE organizations informed regarding NERC Standards Development activities associated with NERC’s Critical Infrastructure Protection Standards. Solicit input from appropriate FE subject matter experts and effectively communicate FE’s position on proposed regulatory standards to NERC.
    • Ensuring timely adherence from responsible FE business units to all new/revised NERC and RF regulatory obligations associated with Critical Infrastructure Protection Standards.
    • Serving as subject matter expert on emerging utility industry issues through benchmarking and participation in appropriate utility forums/groups.
    • Recommending and/or implementing appropriate programs/initiatives, leading cross-functional project teams as necessary, in order to timely implement effective integration of compliance programs or initiatives.
    • Providing guidance to business unit and department analysts, provide internal technical guidance, and serve as a “sounding board” to the Director and Senior Management on matters pertaining to organizational, business and compliance issues.



    • Bachelor’s degree in networking, computer science or engineering required with 12 years relevant work experience required OR Bachelor’s degree in a non-technical business field required with14 years relevant work experience required. Relevant work experience will include experience leading efforts to develop and implement new or significantly revised compliance programs
    • Minimum 8 years relevant work experience in IT, engineering, operations, planning or compliance functions associated with bulk electric system (transmission or generation) preferred.
    • Demonstrated effectiveness in building relationships with diverse groups.
    • Superior written and oral communications skills – the ability to communicate effectively within all levels of the organization and regulators.
    • Exceptional leadership, teamwork and interpersonal skills to aid in the resolution of compliance issues.
    • Superior analytical abilities involving complex problems; exercise sound judgment.
    • Strong leadership and organizational skills for planning, developing and performing assessments and coordinating resolution of compliance issues.
    • Viewed as technical expert in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
