Job purpose

This position is responsible for approval or denial of conventional mortgage loans based on adherence to company, investor and FNMA/FHLMC requirements.

 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Accurately underwrite a minimum of 2-3 new loan files per day, volume permitting, to determine whether buyer, property and loan conditions meet SPM and investor standards
  • Evaluate complex loan scenarios, loan applications, inspection reports and financial reports to assess financial risk, including potential fraud
  • Request addition information when needed and set loan conditions
  • Review and sign off on underwriting and closing conditions as they are met
  • Respond to originator/processor questions regarding loan programs, clarification of loan conditions and status of loans in process
  • Submit loans through the appropriate AU system and validate findings
  • Use thorough understanding of products/requirements to provide consultation regarding viable loan alternatives
  • Work with vendors to order appraisal and mortgage insurance-related items
  • Perform other duties and/or mortgage related tasks as assigned

 

Skills/Knowledge

  • Knowledge of standard underwriting practices, procedures and guidelines
  • Demonstrated ability to calculate self-employment income
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a professional manner and setting
  • Strong ability to prioritize with a keen sense of urgency and attention to detail
  • Able to read and interpret various loan documents such as promissory notes, regulatory and legal directives and other loan documents
  • Able to plan and organize tasks and work responsibilities to achieve objectives
  • Able to complete work in a timely and consistent manner
  • Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts and provide information to resolve the situation
  • Able to work well under pressure, meet multiple and sometimes competing deadlines
  • Able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions
  • Able to apply basic math; calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions and percentages
  • Intermediate Excel skills, including formulas and pivot tables and AUS Systems

Certifications

  • FHA DE and VASAR (LAPP) certificates preferred

 

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 3 years of mortgage lending experience with 1 year of underwriting exposure, or equivalent combination required

 

Working conditions & Physical requirements

  • Able to navigate a standard office environment
  • Able to attend meetings off-site, on occasion
